It is well-balanced with fat fruit and great concentration on the palate accompanying rich and sweet cherries, dried fruits, figs and raisins which dominate the nose. Rounded, harmonious and still fresh, this is a thrilling bottle from a well-established port house which is drinking well now.

The 2003 Nenin offers up cranberry, black cherries, cedar and tobacco on the nose with spicy, herbal and earthy undertones. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc here has led to a lower acidity and a bit more weight around the mid-palate. Château Nenin belongs to the Delon family of the famous Château Léoville Las Cases.

Graham, Porto, 1980

Graham is one of the great port houses, producing vintage port of exceptionally deep colour and sweet styles. Graham stands alongside the other famous wineries of Taylor and Fonseca, and according to Robert Parker "has probably been the most consistent producer of great port in the post- World War II era. Their vintage ports are truly sublime and sumptuous."

The 1980 is one of the most underrated vintages of Graham's port. It holds true to the classic Graham's style and this far on is still showing a great amount of tannins. Grenadine, ripe figs and chocolate come to the nose whilst the soft and smooth palate is sublime before a great finish. Despite not performing well in its youth, this vintage shows how well Graham can perform in slightly tougher years and is now drinking incredibly well.

Ferreira, Porto, 1963

The 1963 vintage was exceptional and no other vintage can claim such a roll of classic vintage ports. The Ferreira port house is hugely underrated when it comes to discussing the great ports and this year is testament to that fact. The 1963 has figs, raisins and dried fruit on the nose with an interesting touch of sous-bois, it has great acidity despite being on the sweeter side of ports of this age. The finish is extraordinary and the complexity on the palate is evident. A well-crafted and complete port with robust and rich flavours.

Paul Avril Clos des Papes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2010 (Magnum)

99 points from Robert Parker and 19/20 from Jancis Robinson go to show that this red is a near embodiment of perfection found in the region and spectacular example of a fine Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Composed of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre and 15% Syrah, this is a classic blend, produced in the venerable Clos des Papes winery. The wine is full-bodied and powerful whilst fresh with faultless structure. On the nose are concentrated notes of pure dark fruits, raspberries, ripe black currants all intertwined with floral, olive, spice and liquorice nuances. With an alcohol percentage just under the 16% mark, this is a big wine with wonderful texture, considerable tannin, a huge finish and structure so good it will easily see it through the next 30 years or so. Absolutely delicious and a wonderful opportunity to see the full potential of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Paul Avril's Clos des Papes has long been one of the great estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate's history starts in the 1700s but actual winemaking only began towards the end of the 19th Century. All wines here are aged in old wooden foudres for 15 months or so and the result is spectacular wines which tend to be the benchmarks for any long-living Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds.
