The region of Rioja, known formally as La Rioja, dates back to 873 AD and gets its name from the small river, Rio Oja, which runs through it. Rioja was transformed by the monks who gradually gathered skills and knowledge in winemaking and started producing fine wines of great quality. Inspired in many respects by the winemaking in Bordeaux, the wines here tend to be distinctively oaked giving generous, warm wines with hints of vanilla and a dark red colour. There are many regulations in place for the oaking process in Rioja which help to contribute to the exceptional quality and smoothness of these wines.

The area is located under large mountains which shelter the vineyards from strong winds and provide a moderate, continental climate. The soils typically consist of limestone, silt and sandstone and serve as a great match for the grape varieties used, namely Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. Rioja is split into the three sub regions of Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa.
