Wagram produces some of the finest wines made from the Grüner Veltliner and Roter Veltliner grape varieties in the whole of Austria. The wine-producing sub-region of Wagram is situated to the immediate north-west of Vienna on the north and south banks of the River Danube in the heart of Lower Austria (Niederösterreich). Its vineyards lie on a plateau sitting on top of an escarpment, at approximately 40 meters above sea level, composed of well-drained, fertile loam and glacial loess sitting on marine deposits rich in minerals allowing for deep root penetration and absorption of minerals. This section is more than 20 miles long and stretches as far as Kamptal in the west. The vineyards to the south of the river include the villages of the Tullnerfeld area as well as the historically important wine town of Klosterneuburg just outside Vienna. Until 2007 the region was known as Donauland after the German name for the Danube.

domaine ott vineyards in wagram, austriaWagram has a warm continental climate with the heat of the Pannonian Plain to the east being moderated by the Danube and the alpine winds which blow down the course of the river valley. The white wines from Wagram are relatively full-bodied, aromatic and flavoursome. The Grüner Veltliner produced here has a certain spiciness and the reserve wines add a richness too. Good quality Riesling and Pinot Blanc wines are also made here. The Roter Veltliner (surprisingly no relation to the Grüner Veltliner grape variety), despite being light red in colour, is used to make good quality white wine which has a reputation for aging well. The region's best producers also make rich and opulent red wines from Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt varieties. There are many good producers in Wagram including Bernhard Ott and the Stift Klosterneuburg which was founded in 1114.
