Adelaide Hills

autumn vine leaves in an adelaide hills vineyardThe Adelaide Hills is probably Australia's premium cool climate wine producing region. It is situated due east of Adelaide within half an hours drive of the city. The cool climate here particularly favours white wine grapes such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris but red wines are also made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Pinot Noir. The very coolest areas make excellent Australian sparkling wines from the two champagne varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Vineyard altitudes begin at 400 meters above sea level and the undulating folds of its topography provide a high number of aspects and mesoclimates along its 50 mile length. Vineyards tend to be small and quite steep necessitating hand harvesting of the grapes.

The Adelaide Hills enjoyed something of a boom in the production of good quality wine in the 19th. century before the wine industry entered a decline. Its recrudescence in the 1970s was due to interest and demand for wine grapes that were leaner with greater acidity and fruit definition making more elegant examples than the fatter, more overripe style of wine that Australia had become known for. It is a large area but up until now only two official sub-regions have been demarcated, namely the Piccadilly Valley and Lenswood. The soils vary widely across the region but are largely composed of assorted loams, many of which have a high sand content, sitting atop clay-based sub-soils which can be mixed with shale and ironstone. Summers here are warm, rather than hot, with very cool nights and its rainfall, most of which occurs in winter, is much higher than in the Mclaren Vale.

The region consists of approximately 90 wineries and many more grape growers who sell their fruit to wineries many of which are located outside the region. D'Arenberg is one of the highest profile producers here and Brian Croser, founder of the celebrated Petaluma winery, was an early champion of the cool climate possibilities of the region in the 1970s having successfully grown very high quality Chardonnay fruit. Other lauded wineries from the Adelaide Hills region include Nepenthe and Shaw & Smith.

d'Arenberg, The Stump Jump Chardonnay, Adelaide Hills, 2011

The Stump Jump is a charming, lightly-wooded Chardonnay from the famous d'Arenberg winery. The grapes are carefully crushed and basket pressed to produce a fresh, crisp white wine which is oaked to give a beautifully smooth finish. Lovely to drink on its own or a great accompaniment to a meal.
