With an alcohol percentage just under the 16% mark, this is a big wine with wonderful texture, considerable tannin, a huge finish and structure so good it will easily see it through the next 30 years or so. Absolutely delicious and a wonderful opportunity to see the full potential of a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A superb wine to drink with roasted red meats and game such as grouse or wild boar.
Paul Avril's Clos des Papes has long been one of the great estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate's history starts in the 1700s but actual winemaking only began towards the end of the 19th Century. All wines here are aged in old wooden foudres for 15 months or so and the result is spectacular wines which tend to be the benchmarks for any long-living Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds.
