The dominant grape variety of Gigondas is always the Grenache, an excellent grape when correctly grown and vinified, and the backbone and mainstay of the majority of red wines in the southern Rhone valley. Generously giving sums up this grape's character. It produces about 80% of the red wine in this appellation with some Mourvedre and Syrah added to improve the overall balance and add a little bit more complexity and interest. Although these wines are perfectly approachable soon after bottling they can usually be expected to improve for up to a decade and often a good deal longer than that.
