Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Échézeaux Grand Cru, 1969 offers the opportunity to taste a fully mature red Burgundy from this most famous and legendary Côte de Nuits producer and from a very good vintage in the Côte de Nuits. Although Gevrey-Chambertin is probably the single best known red wine producing village in Burgundy amongst connoisseurs it is undoubtedly the village of Vosne-Romanée, home of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC), which holds the greatest allure. Grand Crus abound on the vineyard slopes here and DRC is universally acknowledged to be the very best of some outstanding producers. The Domaine’s parcel of vines in the grand cru vineyard of Échézeaux are located in the ‘Poulailleres’ lieu-dit (specific named site) below the Les Beaux Monts premier cru vineyard and bordering that of Grands-Échézeaux. Although both Échézeaux and Grands-Échézeaux actually lie within the commune of Flagey-Échézeaux they are generally regarded as being Vosne wines.
Great red Burgundy is highly sought-after and a large factor is the incredible nose that the best of these wines deliver. This 1969 Échézeaux Grand Cru offers great complexity in its bouquet with sous bois (undergrowth) and caramel aromas to the fore supported by undertones of the farmyard and more than a hint of spice. On the silky smooth palate one can expect sweet, dried fruits with strawberry and red cherry flavours and a degree of minerality. Lovers of this famous producer's wines will not want to miss this rare chance to drink such a mature grand-cru Vosne wine from this highly prestigious house.
