Château Martet lies just south of the Dordogne between Castillon-le-Bataille and St Foy-La-Grande just 25 km from Saint-Emilion. It consists of some 25 hectares of vines on well-drained slopes with 18 hectares of clay on limestone soils and 7 hectares of clay and gravel. The vineyard was purchased about 20 years ago by Patrick de Coninck who hired the son of Francois of Tertre Roteboeuf in St Emilion as consultant and who undertook radical restructuring of the vineyard.
The white grape varieties planted on 3 hectares of vineyard are sauvignons blanc and gris, old semillon vines and muscadelle, which together produce an excellent fresh and fruity dry white wine with exceptional value. Cultivation is done following bio-dynamic principles. The final blend is in the proportion 60% Sémillons, 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Sauvignon Gris and 10% Muscadelle. The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo an overnight pre-fermentation soak before a gentle pressing. The wine is then fermented at a constant 18°C in stainless steel and is aged for approximately 3 to 4 months on the lees before racking and bottling.
Meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar is clearly evident and accounts for a final quality that is far superior to the normal standard in this area. This charming dry white wine is characterised by its floral nature, subtle finesse and notes of exotic fruits. For best results drink it young and serve between 9°-12°C.
