Château Lagrange is a 3rd. classed growth in Saint Julien according to the 1855 classification. It is the largest classified growth in the Médoc with 113 hectares of vineyards. Following its acquisition by the Japanese Suntory group in 1983 the estate has undergone both replanting in the vineyard and modernisation in the winery. The plantings consist of 65 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 28 percent Merlot and 7 percent Petit Verdot and the Ch. Lagrange blend usually contains more of the latter grape variety than other classed growths.
The Wine Spectator was bowled over by the quality of this wine and stated adamantly that it was the best vintage of Lagrange for many years. Robert Parker was also impressed writing:
"An impressive performance by Lagrange, the 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purple color with obvious notes of melted licorice, creme de cassis, and toasty new oak. This ripe, dense, full-bodied St.-Julien is chewy, thick, high in tannin, large-bodied, and impressively long and dense."
A delicious wine that will provide superb drinking until 2030 and heartily recommended with roast lamb and beef, goose, duck and game.
