Burgundy
Burgundy - a highly respected wine region with a long history - produces some of the world’s most exclusive fine wines on its steep slopes and sharp vales of marl and limestone. Burgundy wines have a strong link to Christianity as monks, who enjoyed high standards of living would carefully select and famously enclose within walls, the best small plots of land for their own drinking and to sell at high prices. Most Burgundy red wines are Pinot Noirs and white wines are Chardonnay. Pinot Noir is a very hard grape to grow and Burgundy produces fantastic results that age beautifully.
Due to Napoleonic inheritance laws entitling every child to part of the land, vineyards have become smaller over the generations and the resulting low supply of each wine has led to high prices and a huge focus on terroir. The valley known for its fine wines and indeed home to most of the Burgundy Grand Crus is the Côte d’Or which splits into Côte de Nuits, where you find the famous Echezeaux, Richebourg, Romanée St Vivant, La Tache and Romanée-Conti, and into Côte de Beaune home to the Cortons and the famous Burgundy white wines. Notable villages of Burgundy include Vosne-Romannée, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet all of which offer rich and complex grand and premier crus.
