Bordeaux

Bordeaux, probably the most famous wine region in the world, is home to some of the most majestic and prestigious red wines France has to offer. Wine production in Bordeaux started in the first century AD introduced by Roman legions and soon after became the object of poetry before truly blossoming in the 12th century. The left bank of Bordeaux, composed of gravel, pebbles, clay and sand, includes the sub regions of Médoc and Graves, home to the complex and tannic Bordeaux first growth wines. The right bank, mainly clay and limestone, consists most notably of the supple and full-bodied wines of St Emilion and Pomerol.

Bordeaux enjoys a temperate and differing climate affected greatly by its proximity to the sea and uses blends of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and occasionally Malbec to produce fine wines the best of which can age for over fifty years. The variations of soil, microclimates and blends lead to huge diversity and in places like Pauillac they provide excellent conditions for producing outstanding Bordeaux fine wines such as Château Mouton-Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Lafite-Rothschild, found not far from Château Margaux and Château Haut-Brion.
