Barossa Valley

Australia’s oldest wine region, the Barossa Valley, lies about thirty miles Northeast of Adelaide in the region of South Australia and with its outstanding reds setting the standard for Australian wine, it has become Australia’s most celebrated wine-making area. Although producing elegant Rieslings amongst the whites and superb fortified wines, Barossa Valley fine wines tend to be Shiraz reds, Shiraz being a new world term for Syrah, with other French varieties also used. The valley has a hot continental climate with clay loam and sandy soils which yield full-bodied and exuberant wines.

Wine production in this region founded by German settlers only started in the 19th Century but has some of the oldest vines in the world. These famous vines produce powerful and robust reds with brilliant depth and capacity to age. With amazing wineries like Penfolds and Torbreck, Barossa Valley fine wines have secured the valley’s position as one of the greatest and most respected wine regions in the world.
