Adelaide Hills
The Adelaide Hills is a region north of McLaren Vale in South Australia and is split into the two sub regions of Lenswood and Piccadilly. It is known for growing Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc for whites and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir for the reds. Having produced wines of great quality in early 1800s, the industry here declined dramatically towards the end of the century only to pick up again with awesome pace in the 1970s.
Due to its range of altitudes, which peak at 600m, and maritime influences, the Adelaide Hills has a very cool climate, one of the coolest in South Australia, and the variation allows it to grow a great variety of wines. Because of the altitude the Adelaide Hills is home to some fantastic white wines and some of the best Sauvignon Blancs in Australia. As for red wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends grow very well in the warmer parts of the region. The soils tend to consist of loose sandy ground, silt and loam.
